Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed a police inspector and seven civilians during a night attack on Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Sa’ad, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying the assailants stormed the community on Monday night, attacked two houses and set them ablaze.
He said, “The attackers came on the night of Monday and launched a bloody attack on two houses, burnt the houses and killed one police officer and seven civilians during the attack.”
Security operatives have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, with troops, police personnel, hunters and other security groups deployed to the area.
The Adamawa State Police Command also confirmed the attack.
The command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, said initial reports indicated that five bodies, including that of a police inspector, were recovered after the attackers fled the community.
He said, “The report we received from the area is that on Monday night, dead bodies of five people were recovered, four civilians and an inspector of police, after the attackers left. We are still waiting for an update, since troops have been deployed with all the security agencies, including vigilante and hunters, to hunt for the attackers.”
Nguroje added that the command was awaiting further updates from security personnel operating in the area.
He said, “If there is any new development concerning the attack, I will surely contact you for a detailed briefing.”
The latest incident highlights ongoing security concerns in parts of Hong Local Government Area, where communities have repeatedly come under attacks linked to insurgent activities.
Residents of several communities in Adamawa State, particularly those located near routes leading to the Sambisa Forest, continue to face threats from Boko Haram and other armed groups.
Authorities said efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible for the latest attack and restore normalcy in the affected community.
