Police in Anambra State have arrested a 49-year-old man, Chima Ogumba, suspected of armed robbery and recovered a pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The suspect was arrested on the morning of August 17, 2026, during an operation by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, according to the state police command.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operatives searched Ogumba after storming the identified area on Nkpor Road, leading to the recovery of the firearm and ammunition.
“The Anambra State Police Command operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu on the morning of August 17, 2026, arrested a 49-year-old armed robbery suspect, Chima Ogumba.
“The team also recovered one pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges from him in Nkpor Road, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State.
“The operatives, upon storming the identified area, conducted a search on the suspect that led to the recovery of one pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges.
“The suspect was unable to give a satisfactory and reasonable account of his possession of the firearm and ammunition.”
The police said the suspect’s inability to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the firearm and ammunition prompted further investigation.
Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered a thorough investigation to establish Ogumba’s possible involvement in armed robbery and other criminal activities.
The investigation will also seek to determine the source of the recovered firearm and ammunition and their intended use.
The command said the arrest formed part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal activities through intelligence-led operations and targeted security interventions.
Ama reiterated the command’s commitment to proactive policing, sustained patrols and tactical operations aimed at identifying and dismantling criminal networks across Anambra State.
