Early Morning Fire Guts Sections of Kano’s Singa Market

By Joy Yesufu

An early morning fire on Monday gutted parts of Singa Market, one of Kano’s busiest commercial hubs, causing extensive damage to shops and goods.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the day, spread rapidly across sections of the market before emergency responders arrived.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, said the service received a distress call at about 3:16 a.m. and promptly deployed firefighters to the scene.

“As of about 10 a.m., some pockets of the market were still burning, while our personnel continued efforts to fully contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other areas,” Yusif said.

He added that details on the cause of the fire and the extent of losses would be provided after a full assessment of the incident.

Meanwhile, a separate fire incident was reported last Friday in Onitsha, Anambra State, where a 95-year-old woman lost her life after being trapped in a burning residential building.

The fire reportedly started at about 5:15 p.m. in one of the apartments of a two-storey building on Fabikez Street, Omagba Phase 2, Onitsha North Local Government Area, before spreading to adjoining apartments.

Officials of the Anambra State Fire Service eventually brought the blaze under control after several hours, with assistance from residents and passersby.

The inferno was said to have caused property damage running into several millions of naira.
