Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his position to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State.
The development was confirmed on Monday in a brief statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
“The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed,” the statement read.
Tuggar’s exit follows earlier indications that he was among members of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet considering stepping down to contest elective positions ahead of the next political cycle.
His Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had previously disclosed the minister’s intention to seek the governorship seat.
“The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship of Bauchi State,” Abdulkadir had said.
He also noted that Tuggar would comply with the timetable and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding political participation.
Tuggar, an indigene of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, had previously contested for the governorship position.
His resignation is expected to trigger political realignments within Bauchi State and could influence the emerging dynamics ahead of the elections.
