No fewer than four farmers have died while unspecified numbers of people still missing as suspected armed herders invaded Anwule community in Oglewu District of Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.
It was gathered that armed herders stormed farmlands in the area on Monday and Tuesday, killing the victims who were working on their farms.
A local who spoke on condition of anonymity, told journalists on the phone in Makurdi, Tuesday that the community has been living in fear as the attackers continue to move freely without resistance.
According to him, the armed herders killed two farmers on Monday and another two on Tuesday afternoon.
He added that some people are still missing, as at 6pm, adding that the herders came into the village again in the evening.
Chairman of Ohimini LGA, Adole Gabriel, confirmed the incident.
He stated that he had already reported the attack to the state government and security agencies.
“Four people were killed between Monday and Tuesday by armed herders. The government has already deployed security personnel to the area,” Gabriel stated.
When contacted , the Benue State Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, did not respond to calls or messages sent to her cell phone.
