The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed additional personnel and tow trucks along the Abuja–Lokoja highway in response to the persistent traffic congestion currently affecting the corridor.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the deployment was ordered by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to ease the gridlock and ensure the prompt removal of broken-down vehicles and other obstructions impeding traffic flow.
According to the FRSC, the congestion has been worsened by increased vehicular movement associated with the festive season, ongoing construction work at several sections of the road, and poor driving habits by some motorists.
“The congestion is largely due to increased vehicular movement, ongoing construction points, as well as undisciplined and impatient drivers driving against traffic,” Ogungbemide said.
He urged motorists travelling along the corridor to cooperate with FRSC personnel and strictly observe traffic regulations to facilitate smooth movement and enhance safety.
“Motorists are advised to cooperate with officers on duty for seamless traffic flow and to avoid actions that could further compound the situation,” he added.
The intervention follows widespread reports of severe traffic congestion on the Abuja–Lokoja highway, which has left many motorists stranded for days, just days ahead of the Christmas celebrations.
The gridlock, which has reportedly lasted for about three days, has triggered public concern. Some motorists told the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) that they had been stuck on the highway since early Saturday, with limited access to food, water, and fuel.
