NBS Reports Drop in Inflation to 15.10% in January

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased slightly to 15.10 per cent in January 2026, down from 15.15 per cent recorded in December 2025, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The statistics office said the CPI declined to 127.4 points in January from 131.2 in December, reflecting a 3.8-point decrease within the review period.

On a month-on-month basis, headline inflation stood at -2.88 per cent in January, compared to 0.54 per cent in December, indicating a slowdown in the rate at which prices increased.

Food inflation also moderated during the month, easing to 8.89 per cent from 10.84 per cent in December.

The NBS attributed the development to a slower rise in average prices across key consumer goods.

“In January 2026, the headline inflation rate eased to 15.10 per cent, down from 15.15 per cent in December 2025,” the bureau stated in its report.

It added that the negative month-on-month rate suggests that the pace of price increases was lower compared to the previous month.

The latest figures come after inflation rose to 15.15 per cent in December 2025, raising concerns over persistent price pressures. However, despite the marginal decline recorded in January, many Nigerians continue to grapple with high living costs across major cities and rural communities.
