The Delta State Police Command has arrested Chief Omorede Sunday, organiser of the Oramudu Festival in Ozoro Community, alongside four others, over alleged cases of sexual assault and molestation of young women during the event.
The arrests followed reports that several female attendees were sexually violated during the festival, sparking outrage within the community and beyond.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Aina Adesola, strongly condemned the incident, describing acts of sexual violence as criminal, inhumane, and a gross violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of victims.
The Command has also deployed tactical and investigative teams to track down other suspects and ensure prosecution.
The Commissioner subsequently ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation.
“Tactical and investigative assets have been deployed with a clear mandate to identify, apprehend, and prosecute all individuals found culpable,” the statement read.
The Command also called on members of the public—particularly victims and witnesses—to come forward with relevant information to aid ongoing investigations, assuring that all disclosures would be treated with strict confidentiality and professionalism.
The police further urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while reaffirming their commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and maintaining public order.
Authorities assured that all individuals found responsible for the alleged offences would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
