A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) has detonated in Woro community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Monday morning, reportedly leaving several people dead and others injured.
According to local sources, the explosion occurred in the early hours when a vehicle allegedly drove over the device, triggering a blast that threw the community into panic.
Residents who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the number of casualties could not be immediately ascertained.
“There was an explosion around Woro this morning. It claimed lives, but the exact number is still unclear. A car reportedly ran over an IED suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram elements,” a source said.
Another resident, also confirmed the incident, heightening concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, were unsuccessful.
The latest incident comes amid rising insecurity in the community.
Woro had recently witnessed a deadly attack by suspected terrorists, which reportedly left dozens dead and at least 176 persons abducted, including women and children.
The development has intensified fears among residents, who say the community remains vulnerable to repeated attacks by armed groups.
