At least 18 people have been killed in fresh attacks by suspected gunmen on Kawel and Kopkon communities in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, deepening concerns over the persistent insecurity in the area.
The attackers reportedly stormed the communities late Sunday night, opening fire on residents while they slept and forcing many others to flee for safety.
Confirming the incident, Bokkos Youth Leader, Christopher Luka, said local youth leaders received distress calls shortly after midnight informing them of the attacks.
According to him, armed men invaded the communities and shot several residents, leaving at least 18 people dead, while the casualty figure could rise as search efforts continue.
“A youth leader called around 12 a.m. and reported that gunmen had attacked the community and shot several persons. So far, 18 deaths have been confirmed,” Luka said.
He disclosed that security agencies were immediately alerted and responded to the reports.
“I contacted security personnel, and they confirmed that they had received information about the incident and were moving to the affected communities,” he added.
Luka described the killings as unprovoked and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.
The latest violence comes less than a week after the killing of the District Head of Gwande, Saf Samuel Alaket, who was reportedly attacked along the Sha-Daffo axis while returning from a traditional council meeting.
As of press time, neither the Plateau State Police Command nor Operation Safe Haven had issued an official statement on the incident despite efforts to obtain confirmation.
The recurring attacks have renewed calls for stronger security measures and lasting solutions to the cycle of violence in Plateau State.
