Twenty-seven victims of the recent deadly attack in Bindi-Jebbu community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, were given a mass burial on Friday, as residents and leaders mourned the unprovoked killings and renewed calls for justice and security.
The victims, mostly farmers including women and children, were murdered in their sleep when gunmen stormed the village in the early hours of July 15, 2025.
Several others were injured in the attack and are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.
Speaking during the burial ceremony, Chairman of Riyom LGA, Bature Shuwa, decried the recurring assaults on rural communities in the area, describing the latest incident as a tragic blow to the local population.
“We are gathered here today in unspeakable grief, hearts heavy with sorrow, to mourn our brothers and sisters—twenty-seven precious lives – cut down in a cruel and senseless act of violence,” Shuwa said.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families, stating, “Your pain is ours; your loss, a wound in the heart of all the Riyom people. We remember them not just as victims, but as fathers, mothers, children, farmers, neighbours, and friends.”
The council boss called for renewed commitment to justice, peace, and community safety, pledging not to relent until perpetrators are brought to justice.
Shuwa also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for his prompt visit to the community following the attack, noting that his presence offered solace to grieving residents.
“We will not forget the love and solidarity you have shown us,” Shuwa said, adding that the presence of the state government delegation at the burial further affirmed the administration’s concern and commitment to protecting lives in rural Plateau.
The attack is the latest in a series of assaults on farming communities in Plateau State, prompting fresh concerns over insecurity and the need for proactive government action.
