Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has backed the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as consistent with the party’s power-sharing agreement and commitment to fairness.

Kwankwaso announced his support while addressing party leaders, delegates and supporters during the NDC National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday.

“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so that the region can complete its eight years. This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement,” he said.

The endorsement came shortly after delegates at the convention adopted a resolution allocating the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South for a single four-year term.

The motion, moved by Afam Victor Ogene, was adopted unanimously as the opposition party intensified efforts to strengthen internal unity ahead of the next general election.

NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, said the arrangement formed part of a broader rotational leadership framework designed to balance regional interests within the party.

According to him, the presidential ticket would return to Northern Nigeria in 2031 after the completion of the South’s proposed tenure.

The convention also witnessed the ratification of members of the party’s National Working Committee, clearing the way for aspirants to begin processing presidential nomination forms.

Meanwhile, the convention drew massive crowds to the Federal Capital Territory, triggering heavy traffic congestion across parts of Abuja, particularly around Ahmadu Bello Way and adjoining roads near the event venue.

Supporters affiliated with the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient movements were seen chanting slogans, dancing and celebrating around the convention ground as political activities continued throughout the day.

Security operatives were deployed to manage traffic and maintain order, while traders and food vendors occupied nearby open spaces to take advantage of the large turnout.
