Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attack by ISWAP fighters on a forward operating base in Mandaragirau, Borno State, killing at least 38 insurgents and recovering weapons.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Joint Task Force said its troops responded with coordinated ambushes and a structured defensive-offensive operation that forced the attackers to retreat. Air support units also provided surveillance and targeting assistance during the engagement.
According to the statement signed by L.t Col. Sani Uba, eight bodies were recovered at the scene, while intelligence from local sources indicated that more than 30 additional fighters were killed along the withdrawal route between Garin Mallum and Garin Gajere, extending toward the Timbuktu Triangle.
Blood trails and abandoned equipment were cited as evidence of further casualties.
Recovered items include seven AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, four rocket-propelled grenade bombs, and assorted ammunition.
The military reported no fatalities among its personnel. However, one mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle was struck by rocket fire, and injured soldiers received immediate medical attention.
The Joint Task Force said follow-up operations are ongoing in the area to recover additional materials and secure the corridor.
