The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as the failure of the university management to address its six-point demands.
The union announced the industrial action on Wednesday following a Congress meeting held after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration on August 11.
In a statement signed by the chapter’s Chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, and made available to journalists on Wednesday, ASUU said its demands remained unresolved despite the expiration of the ultimatum.
Among the union’s demands are the immediate commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for staff and the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, including the payment of arrears accruing from January 1, 2026.
The union also demanded the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.
Other demands include the provision of safe and secure staff quarters, the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence, and an end to what the union described as the intimidation of its leaders.
ASUU-PLASU said the university administration had failed to satisfactorily address the issues despite the 14-day ultimatum.
According to the statement, “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed.”
The union said the decision to embark on the strike followed approval by the National Executive Council of ASUU.
It consequently directed its members to suspend all academic activities until further notice.
The development is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university unless the union and management reach an agreement to resolve the outstanding issues.
