Gunfire Rocks PDP National Headquarters Amid Factional Dispute

By Kamsi Anayo, Awka

Gunshots were reported at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday as rival factions clashed over scheduled meetings.

The National Working Committee (NWC) elected in Ibadan and the group supported by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had both planned gatherings for the day.

Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary of the pro-Wike faction, arrived at Wadata Plaza with members of his group.

Soon after, members of the Taminu Turaki faction arrived the headquarters but were prevented from entering.

Two governors from the Turaki faction managed to gain access, but as other members attempted to follow, security operatives fired gunshots and used teargas, forcing many to retreat.

Earlier, Anyanwu told journalists that the security presence was intended to maintain order.

He confirmed that his faction was prepared for the Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee meetings.
