The Governing Council of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) announced on Friday the appointment of Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie (SAN) as the 11th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.
He will succeed Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, following the outcome of the interview process for the position, as the current tenure will expire on December 1, 2024.
In response to this announcement, the Benin United Forum (BUF), a non-governmental organization, has extended its congratulations to the newly appointed Vice Chancellor.
In a press statement signed by the President, Iyamu Osaro Culture and Secretary General Osayuki-Osa Benson, the BUF expressed its support for Prof. Omoregie’s appointment.
The statement reads, in part: “The leadership and stakeholders of the Benin United Forum heartily congratulate Professor Edoba Bright Omoregie on his well-deserved appointment as Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.
“It is evident that Professor Omoregie will leverage his wealth of experience to surpass and build upon the legacies of his predecessors and our 2009 struggle that paved the way for the first Benin man, the late Professor Osayuki Oshodin, to become Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN.
“Therefore, we view the emergence of Professor Omoregie not just as a victory for the Benin Nation but as a significant milestone for the entire Edo people and all Nigerians.
“We also take this opportunity to thank the outgoing management of the University of Benin, led by Professor Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, as well as the Senate and Governing Council for honoring the wishes of the Benin Kingdom and the broader Benin community.”
