The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed the derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service, with three people confirmed dead.
The Corporation also confirmed that coaches derailed from the rail track at Agbor on Monday.
In a statement issued by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation said emergency response teams and relevant authorities had been deployed to the scene to manage the situation and assist passengers.
“The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms that an incident involving the Warri-Itakpe Train Service occurred today.
Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance,” the statement said.
Opeifa explained that the incident involved four coaches departing from the track, an occurrence known in railway operations as a derailment.
He said the corporation was closely monitoring developments and would provide further details as investigations and response efforts continued.
The NRC urged members of the public to remain calm and rely only on official channels for verified information regarding the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the derailment has not been disclosed.
A more detailed statement is expected from the NRC as emergency operations continue at the scene.
