Controversy Trails Former Ondo SDP Governorship Candidate Death

By Kamsi Anayo, Awka

Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State’s death, has stirred controversy amid allegations that his passing may not have been from natural causes.

Akingboye, popularly known as “OBA”, reportedly died on Sept. 3 at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos at the age of 60.

Oyeniyi Iwakun, his spokesman confirmed the death in a statement in Akure.

The late politician contested in the Nov. 16, 2024, Ondo governorship election against Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 12 other candidates.

Since his death, conflicting reports have emerged regarding the cause, ranging from health complications and spiritual claims to allegations of domestic violence.

The controversy intensified after graphic images of Akingboye’s body circulated online, showing bruises and deep cuts on his head and neck, sparking suspicions of foul play.

Civil society groups, activists, and concerned Nigerians have called for a thorough investigation, warning against any attempt to cover up the circumstances of his death.

Social media activist Jimmy Adekanle described the injuries as indicative of a violent attack and urged security agencies, including the police and DSS, to investigate fully.

Meanwhile, Akingboye’s passing has cast a somber mood over Ondo’s political landscape.

Gov. Aiyedatiwa described the news as “shocking,” praising the late politician’s contributions.

“Every death diminishes humanity, and this is one that aches so much,” he said.
