The Council of Legal Education has released an updated list of universities authorised to offer law degree programmes in Nigeria.
This is in line with its regulatory role over institutions permitted to train prospective legal practitioners.
The announcement comes amid continued scrutiny of admissions into law faculties, with the council emphasising that institutions must strictly comply with established standards governing legal education in the country.
In a circular issued on Friday and signed by the Secretary and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, the council confirmed that a total of 114 universities are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme.
The council warned that institutions operating law programmes without official approval would face disciplinary measures.
“Any university that admits students into a law programme without the approval of the Council of Legal Education is acting contrary to the provisions regulating legal education in Nigeria and will be subject to appropriate sanctions.”
It further emphasised that students enrolled in such unapproved programmes would not qualify for admission into the Nigerian Law School, effectively preventing them from completing the professional training required to practise law in Nigeria.
According to the council, the list of approved institutions includes federal, state, and private universities across the country. Some institutions have been placed under temporary moratoriums, restricting fresh admissions into their law faculties for specific academic sessions.
The body noted that the register of accredited universities would continue to be reviewed periodically as part of its responsibility to supervise and regulate the quality of legal training nationwide.
Established under the Legal Education Act, the Council of Legal Education oversees the Nigerian Law School and is responsible for setting and maintaining standards for institutions offering law degrees, preparing graduates for entry into the legal profession.
