The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has expressed deep grief over the death of Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, founding Editor of Newswatch magazine.
In a condolence message, Senator Mark described the late Mohammed as a towering figure in Nigerian journalism, whose courage, professionalism and commitment to truth helped redefine investigative reporting in the country.
He said Mohammed belonged to an exceptional generation of journalists whose dedication to fairness, integrity and public accountability laid the foundation for modern Nigerian journalism and strengthened the nation’s democratic culture.
“Yakubu Mohammed was not just a journalist; he was an institution. As the founding Editor of Newswatch, he played a historic role in shaping investigative journalism and setting enduring standards for the media profession in Nigeria.
“His courage, integrity and dedication to truth will remain a reference point for generations to come,” Mark said.
The former Senate President noted that the country has lost a media icon whose work was driven by patriotism and a profound sense of responsibility to society.
He lamented that Mohammed whose passing, comes only weeks after the death of another Newswatch legend, Dan Agbese, represents another painful blow to the Fourth Estate of the Realm.
Senator Mark extended his condolences to the Mohammed family, the management and staff of Newswatch magazine, and the wider Nigerian media community, as well as all those impacted by the late journalist’s life and work.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Mohammed’s soul and for divine strength for his family and loved ones to bear the loss.
“May his legacy of fearless journalism, professionalism and service to the nation continue to inspire the media and the younger generation,” he added.
