The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Moferewa Maiye over alleged impersonation of a DSS operative and extortion of motorists and commuters in Abuja.
Maiye was arrested late Wednesday at his hideout near NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II, Abuja, after DSS operatives reportedly acted on credible intelligence.
The suspect was allegedly wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying a fake pistol when he was arrested. A security source said he had been using the uniform and imitation firearm to intimidate motorists and commuters and allegedly demand money from them.
During interrogation, Maiye reportedly claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State. He also told investigators that his late brother, identified as Monday Maiye, had been a DSS operative.
According to the source, Maiye claimed that the DSS uniform and other items recovered from him belonged to his late brother.
The suspect remains in DSS custody while investigators examine how he obtained the tactical uniform and other equipment associated with the Service.
The investigation is also expected to determine how long Maiye may have been involved in alleged impersonation and extortion in Abuja.
“Investigators are also trying to establish how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion,” the source said.
The DSS said the arrest reflects its concern over individuals who allegedly pose as security personnel to intimidate members of the public and engage in criminal activities.
“The arrest underscores growing concerns by the Service over the activities of individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and commit criminality,” the source added.
