The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he announced his resignation from the position.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, resigned as Speaker on August 17, 2026, after which lawmakers elected Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I, as his successor.
However, during plenary on Monday, the Assembly formally converted the earlier suspension of Agbebaku into an impeachment, with the new Speaker saying the process was backed by 17 lawmakers.
Idaiye said the impeachment notice had been presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s sitting. He explained that the House proceeded with the impeachment because Agbebaku’s reported resignation had not been formally presented and documented following his suspension.
The new Speaker maintained that Agbebaku was removed through impeachment and did not leave office by resignation.
The formal impeachment motion was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the lawmaker representing Etsako Central, Ahmed Waziri.
Idaiye subsequently directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession, warning that security agencies could be called in if he failed to comply with the Assembly’s directive.
“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku.
“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House,” Idaiye said.
The development formally settles the Assembly’s position on Agbebaku’s status as Speaker, following days of uncertainty surrounding his suspension, reported resignation and the emergence of a new leadership.
