Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the gruesome killing of hunters mistaken for kidnappers by an irate mob in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
The victims, who were traveling for Sallah celebrations, were intercepted by a mob that found dane guns in their vehicle.
Without verification, the mob accused them of being kidnappers and set them ablaze.
A viral video circulating online shows the deceased surrounded by a group of youths before they were burned alive.
The barbaric act has triggered widespread public outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the rising cases of jungle justice and the failure of authorities to curb such lawless executions.
Governor Okpebholo, describing the incident as tragic and condemnable, vowed that justice would be served.
Speaking in Uromi through the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Government House, SP Solomon Osaghale, the Governor assured residents that those responsible would face the full wrath of the law.
“No one has the right to take another person’s life. This level of barbarism is unacceptable. The Commissioner of Police has been directed to launch a full investigation, and those involved will not go unpunished,” Okpebholo said.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the victims were traveling in a commercial truck when they were stopped by a local security outfit.
Upon discovering firearms, the mob attacked them without due process.
Security forces have since arrested four suspects, and the police have been deployed to restore peace and prevent further violence.
The Governor urged the Hausa community in Uromi and other affected residents to remain calm as the government works to ensure justice and lasting security.
When contacted, Edo State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Moses Iyamu, said investigations were ongoing, but he had yet to provide further details as of press time.
