Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid tribute to the patriotism, courage, and ultimate sacrifices of fallen heroes in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He emphasized that their contributions are the foundation of the nation’s unity and peace.
The Governor made this statement during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
“Today is a solemn occasion that reminds us of the ultimate price paid by many for our unity and peace. No honor can truly quantify their sacrifices,” said Governor Okpebholo.
He urged all Nigerians, especially Edo State citizens, to ensure that these sacrifices are not in vain and cautioned against allowing the circumstances that led to the Nigerian Civil War to resurface.
“Our fallen heroes have dedicated their lives to this nation. We remain united today because of their bravery and sacrifice. We honor their memories and pray for the eternal rest of their souls.” He stressed
Governor Okpebholo also expressed the government’s commitment to supporting the families of fallen heroes.
He announced plans for welfare packages to assist these families and mitigate the impact of their death on their loved ones.
The Governor was accompanied by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa; Chief of Staff, Gani Audu; the Commander of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army; a representative of the Oba of Benin; security chiefs; and widows of some fallen heroes.
Highlight of the ceremony was the laying of wreaths by Governor Okpebholo, honoring the sacrifices of the fallen heroes.
