Effurun shooting: PSC confirms dismissal of killer cop, four others

By Kamsi Anayo

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman, alongside four other officers over their role in the murder of 26-year-old Mena Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

The decision, confirmed by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, follows the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings.

Authorities say the dismissals take immediate effect, while the case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for review and possible prosecution.

According to police findings, the officers were implicated in professional misconduct, abuse of office, and actions deemed capable of breaching public peace, culminating in the unlawful killing of the victim.

The police reiterated that no level of suspicion justifies extrajudicial action and emphasized that all suspects are entitled to due process under the law.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2026. Police accounts indicate that Ogidi had received a parcel from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which he later took to a motor park in Effurun for onward delivery.

The parcel was reportedly searched and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition. He was subsequently apprehended by bystanders before officers arrived at the scene.

However, eyewitnesses and motor park officials have provided a different version of events. They claim Ogidi brought the parcel himself for dispatch and initially resisted requests to open it, stating he had been instructed not to do so.

When the parcel was eventually opened under pressure, a firearm allegedly wrapped in clothing was discovered, leading to his detention and the involvement of the police.

Witnesses further alleged that the suspect was already restrained when officers arrived, questioning the use of lethal force. Some also expressed concern over inconsistencies in the narratives surrounding the incident.

Police authorities confirmed that the victim’s remains have been deposited in a mortuary, with an autopsy expected to form part of the evidence in court.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals linked to the case, including a driver and two vigilante members said to be at large.

The police have assured the public of transparency and accountability, stressing that any officer found to have violated the law will face the full weight of justice.
