Eight members of the Scripture Union of Nigeria abducted while returning from a national conference in Imo State on Monday regained their freedom after spending 22 days in captivity.

The delegates were kidnapped on June 14, 2026, along the boundary between Imo and Anambra states as they travelled from the movement’s national conference at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe back to Ibadan, Oyo State.

Their release followed weeks of anxiety among family members, church leaders and well-wishers, who had continued to pray and appeal for their safe return.

The victims included senior officials of the Christian organisation as well as student representatives who attended the national conference.

Before their release, security agencies had launched coordinated operations involving the police commands in Imo and Anambra states to locate the victims and apprehend their abductors.

Investigators had earlier disclosed that intelligence gathering and tracking operations were ongoing to rescue the hostages unharmed.

The abduction had drawn nationwide concern, particularly after information emerged that one of the victims was a 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan who also served as a national officer of the Scripture Union Students’ Fellowship.

Although details surrounding their release remain unclear, the successful rescue has been welcomed by members of the Christian community and the general public.

The incident once again highlights the growing insecurity on major highways in parts of the South-East, where kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly frequent.

Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to intensifying efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction and ensure they are brought to justice.

Church leaders have expressed gratitude to God for the safe return of the delegates while urging authorities to strengthen security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
