A United Airline flight bound for Washington DC declared an emergency and was forced to make an unplanned return to Lagos on Thursday, following technical issues that caused distress among its 245 passengers.
The Boeing 787-8, registered as N27903, began its journey from Murtala Muhammed International Airport but issued an emergency signal, code 7700, shortly after takeoff.
As the flight crew coordinated with air traffic control, passengers experienced a chaotic ride, leading to scattered luggage and spilled food throughout the cabin.
Distressing videos and images highlighted the turbulence faced, with reports indicating that multiple passengers suffered minor injuries during the ordeal.
While the exact cause of the technical malfunction remains uncertain, speculation among passengers points to a possible engine issue.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has been tasked with determining the definitive cause of the incident.
Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, confirmed the situation, stating, “Yes, it is true. The passengers have been lodged into a hotel as stipulated by the NCAA Act.”
United Airlines also acknowledged the incident in a brief statement, attributing the flight’s return to a “technical issue.”
They assured that upon landing, first responders were on site to assist those injured.
This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial safety protocols in place within the aviation industry, and the swift response of both airline personnel and regulatory authorities aims to ensure the well-being of all passengers involved.
