President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, to receive further security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Bayo Onanuga said the President’s decision follows a request from the Kwara State Government for additional security presence in the troubled areas.
He said in response, President Tinubu has directed the military and police authorities to deploy more personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area, and to launch a manhunt for the bandits responsible for the church attack.
Tinubu was expected to depart Abuja on Tuesday for the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, after which he was scheduled to proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.
However, concerned by the escalating insecurity, including the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the attack on Christ Apostolic Church members in Kwara, the President opted to suspend his departure.
He is now awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf, as well as briefing documents from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services on the Kwara incident.
President Tinubu reiterated his directive to security agencies to “do everything possible” to rescue the abducted students and ensure their safe return.
