The Federal Government has renamed the University of Abuja, Yakubu Gowon University.
The decision was taken by the Federal Executive Council on Monday at the Presidential Villa.
The FEC decision was disclosed to State House Correspondents by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the meeting.
The Government’s Spokesman said that the FEC decision would go through the normal procedure for renaming of government institutions.
He explained that the FEC has decided to write the National Assembly for the change of name of the institution.
“The third item is that there is also a decision taken by the Federal Executive Council to rename the University of Abuja to honour elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon.
“The University of Abuja will, henceforth, be called Yakubu Gowon University.
“Of course, the process will have to go to the National Assembly for all legislative work in that direction, but FEC has taken that decision to write to the National Assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja.”
The Minister said that the meeting which was the last for 2024 decided that FEC would go on break from December 18 to January 6, 2025.
