The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to enforce the Supreme Court judgment of July 11, 2024, which grants financial autonomy to Local Governments in Nigeria.
The committee’s primary objective is to ensure that local governments are empowered to function independently, free from interference by state governments.
The initiative aims to uphold the constitutional provisions that recognize local governments as the third tier of government in Nigeria, reaffirming the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to democratic governance.
A statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, office of SGF highlighted the committee’s membership.
He said that the committee will be chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation
Others members of the committee are Hon. Minister of Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice; Hon. Minister of Budget & Economic Planning and Accountant General of the Federation; Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria
The membership of the committee also includes the Permanent Secretary (Federal Ministry of Finance); Chairman, Revenue Mobilization Allocation & Fiscal Commission; Representative of State Governors; Representative of Local Governments
As the committee begins its work, the nation await actionable insights on how local governments can achieve true autonomy and enhance their operational efficiency.
