Fidelia Soriwei, Abuja

A fire outbreak at Gezawa Market in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State has destroyed four containers and eight shops, leaving property worth millions of naira in ruins.

The incident occurred at about 5:15 am on Monday, November 2, 2026, prompting an emergency response from the Kano State Fire Service.

The service’s Public Relations Officer, Kabiru Jafaru, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the fire service received a distress call from one Ibrahim Sani, who alerted officials to the blaze at the market.

Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene and successfully contained the inferno, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the market.

The statement, however, gave a slightly different breakdown of the affected properties, stating that one shop, four containers and seven temporary shops were completely destroyed.

The Director of the Fire Service urged residents and traders to observe fire safety measures, particularly with the onset of the harmattan season, to reduce the risk of further outbreaks.

The incident comes days after another devastating fire destroyed 110 buildings and structures at Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano metropolis on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

The earlier inferno consumed 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures across different sections of the timber market, according to the Fire Service.
