At least five worshippers were shot dead on Friday morning when armed bandits attacked a mosque in Yandoto village, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Witnesses said the gunmen stormed the mosque during early morning prayers, opened fire indiscriminately, and abducted an unspecified number of worshippers before fleeing into the forest.
Several others sustained gunshot wounds.
Residents, described the incident as “barbaric and inhuman,” adding that some of the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.
Spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said he had not yet been briefed by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Tsafe.
The assault has left the community in shock and comes barely a week after a similar attack in Gidan Turbe village, also in Tsafe LGA, where about 40 worshippers were abducted during dawn prayers.
