Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins have assassinated a 58-year old Professor of History at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi MOAUM formerly known as Benue State University(BSU), Prof Gabriel Nyityo and his 19 years younger brother, lorngee John Nyityo.
The duo were killed at Adaka community in Makurdi local government area of the State.
Sources from the area told journalists on Thursday morning that the late Prof Nyityo and his brother were killed in the early hours of Wednesday, 8th July, 2026 in his house.
A colleague of the professor who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the death, stating that a large crowd of sympathizers thronged the deceased residence when he visited.
Prof Nyityo’s death has sent shock to the people of the area and the University community.
When contacted the Benue State Command police public relations officer PPRO DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incidence, saying that Prof. Nyityo and his brother were killed by unknown gunmen.
DSP Edet who confirmed this in a text message to our correspondent on Thursday morning, stated that the command has launched investigation to unravel the mystery behind their killings.
According to her, a team of operatives on patrol received a distress call , along the Adaka Axis and on getting there they saw the bodies of the Prof and his brother.
“One Prof Gabriel Saawua Nyityo ‘m’ 58years and his younger brother one lorngee John Nyityo ‘m’ 19years. Investigation is still goings-on please”, she confirmed .
