Gunmen on Monday launched a deadly attack on Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving several residents feared dead and many others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the community without warning, firing sporadically and triggering panic among residents, who fled to neighbouring villages and nearby bushes for safety.
Local sources described the assault as the most violent incident in the area in several years, noting that the scale of the attack forced many families to abandon their homes.
“The community is traumatised. We have not experienced this level of violence in a long time,” a resident said.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties could not be confirmed, as many residents ran in different directions during the attack, making it difficult to immediately assess the extent of the damage.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said security operatives had been deployed to the area.
“We have been informed of the attack, and the command has deployed a tactical team to the area to ascertain what happened and determine the number of victims. A detailed official statement would be issued after preliminary investigations”Usman said
Some residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that security personnel had begun moving into the affected community to restore calm.
Meanwhile, residents have appealed to the state government and security agencies for urgent intervention, describing the attack as traumatizing and devastating.
