The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has opened investigation into alleged examination malpractice following a viral video that surfaced online over the weekend.
The footage, which has attracted wide public attention, reportedly shows suspected proxies caught impersonating registered candidates during ICAN examinations.
One of the individuals was alleged to be writing on behalf of a senior bank official, while another claimed she was sitting in for a state commissioner for finance.
In a statement signed on Monday by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, ICAN reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice, stressing that its assessment processes are built on globally accepted standards of integrity.
“ICAN wishes to state unequivocally that it maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of examination malpractice, including impersonation. Any attempt to compromise the credibility of our examinations will be met with the utmost disciplinary sanctions,” Olasunkanmi said.
He disclosed that the Institute has commenced a thorough investigation into the allegations and would apply sanctions in line with established regulations, with findings to be made public in due course.
The accounting body also cautioned against speculation or premature conclusions, assuring stakeholders that it remained committed to safeguarding the credibility of its examinations and protecting the integrity of the accounting profession in Nigeria and beyond.
