The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to personnel against the “unwarranted and unethical” practices of indiscriminately transferring case files and misusing public office by certain officers.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized that any officer involved in these practices will face “strict disciplinary actions.”
He asserted that such actions undermine investigations and erode public confidence in the police force.
Egbetokun reaffirmed that the guiding principles of policing must be transparency, professionalism, and accountability.
He has directed all supervisory officers, particularly those in investigative units, to manage cases with utmost diligence and integrity.
Addressing land matters, the IGP clarified that the police lack jurisdiction in purely civil disputes unless a criminal element is involved. In such cases, the State Commissioners of Police will oversee investigations and be held accountable for their outcomes.
Furthermore, the IGP highlighted the issue of frivolous and malicious petitions aimed at harassment.
He said all petitions submitted to the police must include a declaration attesting to their authenticity and confirming that they have not been filed with any other law enforcement body or have been withdrawn before reaching the police.
“Petitioners who submit false information will face appropriate sanctions” he added
