An Ikeja Electric Plc worker was rescued after suffering an electric shock while carrying out repair work on a power pole at Gbagada Bus Stop in Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, attracting commuters and residents who gathered at the scene as the technician’s colleagues worked to bring him down from the elevated power pole.
A video circulating on social media showed two IKEDC field workers attempting to rescue their colleague, who appeared trapped on a ladder attached to the pole.
The technician was seen with his head facing downward while his lower body appeared constrained. He could, however, be seen moving his arms and body as his colleagues tried to free him.
An eyewitness who filmed the incident said the worker survived the electric shock, although his medical condition could not be independently confirmed at the scene.
“This is Gbagada Bus Stop. This incident just happened now. Light just shocked the guy; he is a NEPA guy. Now they’re trying to bring him down; he’s not dead,” the eyewitness said.
The rescue operation attracted a crowd of anxious onlookers who watched as the IKEDC workers carefully attempted to lower their colleague from the power pole.
Details of what caused the electric shock were not immediately available. It was also unclear whether the electricity supply had been isolated before maintenance work began.
Ikeja Electric had not issued an official statement on the incident or provided an update on the worker’s condition as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has again drawn attention to the occupational hazards faced by electricity workers involved in maintenance and repairs on power infrastructure across Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.
