No fewer than nine residents have been killed, while 4,524 others were displaced following rainstorms and windstorms that occurred in Kano State.
About 49 people were injured, with several other victims forced to leave their homes after the storms damaged properties and disrupted communities.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (KSEMA), Isyaku Kubarachi, disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Kano on Friday.
According to him, Bichi Local Government Area had the highest number of affected residents, with 775 victims, followed by Minjibir with 712 and Kibiya with 630. Shanono recorded 530 affected people, while Ajingi had 415.
He maintained that the affected residents were recorded across eight local government areas of the state, namely Bichi, Minjibir, Kibiya, Shanono, Ajingi, Gaya, Rimin Gado, and Kabo, between January and August 2026.
Kubarachi described rainstorms and windstorms as the most destructive among the six major disasters recorded across the state during the period.
“The scale of displacement shows how seriously these storms have affected communities across Kano,” Kubarachi said, stressing the need for urgent support for affected residents.
He explained that the agency conducted assessments in the affected communities to establish the extent of the destruction and identify victims’ immediate needs.
Kubarachi noted that the assessment reports had been forwarded to the Kano State Government for consideration, stressing that relief materials would be distributed as soon as they were made available.
He stated that the agency’s priority is to ensure that people affected by the disasters receive assistance as soon as relief materials become available.
The figures have heightened concerns over the vulnerability of communities across Kano to severe weather, particularly as the rainy season continues to expose residents and properties to storm-related risks.
Meanwhile, the State House of Assembly had earlier urged the government to assist residents affected by rainstorms and other disasters after lawmakers adopted a motion of urgent public importance on July 29.
The motion, sponsored by the member representing Bichi Constituency, Lawan Shehu, was considered during plenary presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore.
The lawmakers’ intervention underscored calls for quicker emergency response, timely distribution of relief materials, and stronger preventive measures to protect communities facing repeated storm disasters.
