At least 13 people were feared killed and several others injured following an overnight attack on Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State.
Residents said the attack occurred around midnight on Thursday while people were asleep.
A community member, Philip Alanga, said the gunmen invaded the area and opened fire on residents, forcing many to flee their homes.
“They came into the community and started shooting. They moved from one house to another attacking innocent people,” he said.
Another resident, Chigoji Rocku, said three of those killed were pregnant women.
The Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Auta, confirmed the incident and described the killings as tragic.
Auta expressed concern over repeated attacks in Bassa LGA and other parts of Plateau State, calling on security agencies to strengthen protection for rural communities.
He also urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack to prevent further violence.
As of press time, spokespersons for Operation Enduring Peace and the Plateau State Police Command had not responded to enquiries on the incident.
