Nigeria’s music icon, Onyeka Onwenu is dead. She died at the age of 72.
An eye witness confirmed her death to the Niche.
She was said to have slumped at a birthday party organized by Mrs Stella Okoli in Lagos.
It was learnt that tragedy struck after she had finished performing at the party.
She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, Lagos but couldn’t make it.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.” The source told the Niche.
Onyeka Onwenu was reputed to be a song writer, singer, performer, broadcaster, politicians and others.
Apart from a successful career in music, Onyeka was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council of Arts and Culture.
In 2013, the Goodluck Jonathan administration appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Women Development Centre.
She was born 31 January 1952.
