Nigeria could face a nationwide power blackout fromMonday as thermal power plants prepare to shut down operations in compliance with directives from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
The Executive Secretary of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), Dr. Joy Ogaji, disclosed the development in a message to industry stakeholders on Sunday.
She said gas suppliers had already notified power generation companies (GenCos) to halt supply to thermal stations in line with PENGASSAN’s strike action.
“Thermal GenCos have received notification from our gas suppliers to shut down our plants following directives from PENGASSAN.
“The Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company has specifically requested GenCos to comply,” Ogaji stated.
The looming shutdown threatens to plunge the nation into darkness, as thermal plants currently account for the bulk of Nigeria’s electricity generation
