The Federal Government has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, describing the outcome as an important milestone in the country’s democratic development.

The congratulatory message was conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in a statement shared on Friday.

Alamgir emerged victorious in Bangladesh’s presidential election after securing 255 votes in the Jatiya Sangsad, the country’s Parliament, against 88 votes garnered by his opponent, retired Colonel Oli Ahmad.

Nigeria commended the Government and people of Bangladesh for the peaceful conduct of the electoral process, noting that the election reflected the country’s commitment to democratic governance.

The Federal Government expressed confidence that the new president would provide responsible leadership aimed at promoting national unity, stability, sustainable development and democratic progress.

According to the statement, Nigeria and Bangladesh enjoy cordial relations founded on mutual respect, shared interests and support for international cooperation.

The government noted that both countries, as members of the Global South, share common priorities in areas such as economic growth, food security, energy security, climate action and sustainable development.

Nigeria also expressed its readiness to work closely with Alamgir’s administration to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, education, healthcare, information and communications technology, pharmaceuticals and cultural exchanges.

The Federal Government further acknowledged Bangladesh’s contributions to regional and international affairs and reaffirmed its commitment to collaboration through multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

As Alamgir prepares to assume office, Nigeria wished him success, good health and wisdom in the discharge of his responsibilities.

The government expressed optimism that his leadership would contribute to continued peace, stability, prosperity and development in Bangladesh.

Alamgir’s election has also drawn congratulatory messages from several countries, including China, the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland, all of which have signalled interest in deepening relations with his administration.
