The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a renovated primary school in Okpoma, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, alongside a solar-powered borehole and drainage system to improve learning conditions and community welfare.
The project was delivered under the Chief of Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects Scheme by Rear Admiral Ibrahim Dipele, an indigene of the community.
The intervention covered the renovation of three blocks containing eight classrooms, staff and administrative offices, toilet facilities and other school infrastructure. A drainage system was also constructed to tackle flooding around the school.
Speaking at the commissioning on Tuesday, the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral S.D. Ibrahim, represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibe Abbas, and said community development was important to strengthening national security and prosperity.
“Improving the quality of primary education in public schools remains one of the most potent drivers of socio-economic development. This project will facilitate a conducive atmosphere for learning.”
He said the solar-powered borehole would provide potable water for pupils, teachers and nearby residents, while the drainage infrastructure would help reduce flooding within the school premises.
Ibrahim urged the community to protect and maintain the facilities to ensure they remain useful to future generations.
He commended Dipele for identifying the educational needs of his community and using the intervention scheme to address them.
“His vision, dedication and commitment to community development are clearly reflected in the successful execution of this project. Through this noble initiative, he has demonstrated that leadership is most meaningful when it positively impacts on the lives of others.”
The Navy said the quick intervention programme was launched in 2024 to strengthen civil-military cooperation and contribute to national development, adding that its responsibilities extend beyond security operations to initiatives that improve citizens’ welfare.
The intervention is expected to provide pupils with a better learning environment, improve access to clean water and reduce the impact of flooding around the school.
The Navy also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies and expressed appreciation to the Bayelsa State Government, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Council, traditional rulers, community leaders, contractors and other stakeholders who contributed to the project’s completion.
Senior naval officers, including the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral O.B.F. Oladipo, traditional rulers, community leaders and other dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony.
