Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has paid tribute to veteran actor Olu Jacobs, describing him as a symbol of Nigerian excellence whose impact on the film industry will be remembered for generations.
Obi expressed his condolences in a message shared on his X account on Thursday, a day after the family of the renowned Nollywood actor announced his death.
Reflecting on Jacobs’ career, Obi said the late actor distinguished himself through decades of contributions to the creative industry in both Nigeria and Britain, earning admiration for his professionalism and dedication to his craft.
“Olu Jacobs represented the excellence of the Nigerian spirit. He exemplified this through his remarkable contributions to the film and creative industry, in a career spanning several decades across both Britain and Nigeria.”
The former governor noted that Jacobs’ life and career demonstrated the value of discipline, talent and commitment, adding that his achievements remain an inspiration to many within and beyond the entertainment industry.
He said the actor’s passing served as a reminder of the need for individuals to make meaningful contributions to society through their skills, responsibilities and talents.
“His passing is once again a reminder to all of us that our time here is limited. Whatever responsibility we are entrusted with, and whatever area we are called to contribute to society, we must give it our very best and ensure that society benefits from our genius, talent and competence,” Obi stated.
Obi also extended his sympathies to the actor’s family, friends, colleagues and members of the Nigerian creative community who are mourning the loss of one of Nollywood’s most respected figures.
“As we remember his life, times and passion, my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues and the entire Nigerian creative community,” he added.
He prayed for strength for Jacobs’ loved ones and for all those affected by the loss, while asking God to grant the late actor eternal rest.
“May the good Lord grant our father, Olu Jacobs, and all the faithful departed eternal rest. Amen,” he said.
Jacobs, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian cinema, built a distinguished career that earned him recognition as one of the most influential figures in Nollywood and the broader African entertainment industry.
