Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has called on Senator Francis Fadahunsi to withdraw comments he described as inflammatory ahead of the Osun State election, warning against rhetoric capable of undermining a peaceful electoral process.
In a statement on Wednesday, Obi said he was concerned by reports attributing threat-laden remarks to the senator, arguing that such comments could heighten political tension and discourage voters.
He said elected officials have a constitutional and moral duty to promote peace, strengthen democratic values and encourage unity, particularly during elections.
According to Obi, democratic contests should provide citizens with an opportunity to freely choose their leaders without intimidation, harassment or coercion.
The former Anambra State governor urged Fadahunsi to retract the alleged statements and apologise to the people of Osun State.
Obi also appealed to political leaders, stakeholders and supporters across party lines to moderate their language and remain committed to peaceful conduct before, during and after the election.
He called on security agencies to closely monitor provocative statements and ensure adequate protection for voters, election officials and other participants in the electoral process.
“The democratic mandate belongs to the people,” Obi said.
He added that no individual, regardless of political office or influence, should seek to interfere with the will of the electorate through fear or coercion.
Obi further urged residents of Osun State to remain calm and law-abiding as they exercise their constitutional right to vote.
The appeal follows growing political activity ahead of the state election, with stakeholders continuing to stress the need for peaceful and credible polls.
