One person sustained injury after a tanker carrying 50,000 litres of diesel lost control and veered off the Iwo Road in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday night.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, saying it occurred near the Jin-Jofes filling station.
Akinwande said the truck skidded off the road at a sharp bend, which caused it to spill its content.
He said that the service received a distress call at about 8pm from one Mr Adisa Kazeem.
According to him, a team of the service officials led by ACFS Adeniyi Adesina was promptly deployed in the scene of the accident.
Akinwande said, “On getting there, a DAF tanker with registration no T17657LA (Lagos) with 50,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) had skidded off the road into a nearby gutter and its content was gushing out.
“The firemen quickly blanketed the spillage with chemical foam compound so as to neutralise the flammability of the content.”
He said the incident resulted from loss of control when the driver tried to negotiate the sharp bend in the road.
The chairman said that both the driver and the motor boy were rescued alive, though the motor boy sustained minor injury on his shoulder.
He added that the motor boy was immediately taken to a near-by hospital for medical treatment.
Akinwande further stated that men of the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps also mobilised to the scene to restore free flow of traffic around the area.
