The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, was absent as his successor, Mojisola Meranda, officially moved into the Speaker’s office.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, after being accused of misconduct and financial misappropriation.
The majority of lawmakers voted to replace him with his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda.
However, Obasa has denied all allegations against him and demanded proof.
Over the weekend, the ousted Speaker insisted that he remains the Speaker until due process is followed to remove him.
His insistence and promise to resume as Speaker created tension over the high possibility of a possible clash between him, his supporteron on the one hand, and Mrs Meranda and her followers on the other.
Police operatives and other security officials screened journalists and visitors ahead of the plenary session.
About three police vehicles were stationed at the Assembly’s main gate, with additional security vehicles positioned within the complex.
However, the anticipated violence and confrontation did not occur as Obasa did not attend the plenary on Monday.
On her part the members of the Lagos Assembly showed their acceptance of Mrs Meranda’s leadership as they ushered her into the Speaker’s office in solidarity.
