Residents and election observers fled for safety on Saturday night after sporadic gunshots were heard at the Ataoja D Ward 4 collation centre in Osogbo, Osun State.
The incident occurred at the premises of Union Baptist Primary School, where collation of results from the governorship election was ongoing.
Witnesses said the gunshots, reportedly fired by security personnel, rang out between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., causing panic in the area.
The reason for the shooting could not be immediately established as of the time of filing this report.
An eyewitness account indicated that several shots were fired into the air, while canisters were also discharged within the premises.
The development triggered confusion around the collation centre, with residents and others nearby running for cover.
The shooting reportedly lasted for more than 15 minutes before calm gradually returned to the area.
The incident occurred while election officials were collating results from Saturday’s governorship poll at various centres across Osun State.
No casualty had been officially reported as of the time of filing this report, while authorities had yet to issue a statement on the development.
