Peter Obi Emerges Sole Presidential Aspirant as NDC Closes 2027 Nomination Window

By Joy Yesufu

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has concluded the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential election, with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, emerging as the sole aspirant for the party’s ticket.

The National Secretary of the NDP, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu
confirmed to the Network that Obi was the only politician to obtain the nomination forms before the deadline for submission closed on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

This effectively positions him as the sole contestant ahead of the party’s presidential selection process.

The Party’s national secretary said, “I can confirm to you that His Excellency, Sir Peter Obi, was the only Presidential Aspirant who obtained the party’s nomination form.

Enekweizu did not make any further statement on the issue

Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State, recently defected to the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress, signalling a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His emergence as the only aspirant is expected to strengthen his influence within the party while setting the stage for the NDC’s preparations for the next presidential race.

The NDC has continued efforts to expand its national appeal amid ongoing political realignments and coalition-building ahead of the 2027 elections.
