Pirates’ Attack on Bonny-Okrika Waterways: Travelers Missing After Boat Hijacking

By Joy Yesufu

Suspected pirates on Thursday hijacked a passenger boat transporting 20 travelers along the Bonny-Okrika waterways in Rivers State.

As the Bonny Local Government Council confirmed, nine passengers have been rescued, while a search continues for the remaining 11.

Bonny LG Chairman Anengi Claude-Wilcox reported that the rescue operation is being conducted in collaboration with security agencies.

He noted that the boat driver violated regulations by navigating through a prohibited channel at Kilometer 10, which likely facilitated the hijacking.

“Security briefings indicate that the vessel, en route Bonny, was intercepted by sea pirates near Isaka in Okrika. Nine passengers have been recovered and returned to Port Harcourt,” said Claude-Wilcox in a statement.

He urged the public to remain calm as efforts intensify to locate the remaining passengers.

Concerned about the rising piracy incidents, Israel Wariboko, chairman of the Maritime Union Workers of Nigeria (Rivers State chapter), condemned the ongoing attacks despite government efforts to curb them.

“The pirates adapt their strategies, moving to different areas whenever they sense increased security presence,” Wariboko stated.

He emphasized the need for enhanced security patrols along the waterways to protect travelers.

“In light of recent developments, we urge authorities to strengthen security operations in the region. We have reported the situation to the police and are coordinating search efforts,” he added.
